VIRGINIA — Big things are happening for Olcott Park, with the historic fountain nearing the day when water will once again dance in myriad patterns and glistening lights.

So, why not toast it with a big first-of-its-kind-for-the-area fundraising celebration?

The first-ever Olcott Fountain Brew Fest will cheer in the fountain’s 80th anniversary with a craft beer tasting event, complete with live music, food and children’s activities.

The Iron Range has “never had anything like this,” said Carly Gobats, brew fest organizer and manager of the 218 Taphouse in Virginia.

Fourteen regional breweries will be represented, with three to four varieties of beer from each set up on the park lawn during the festival Aug. 19. It’s a chance to sample many types of beers, whether you are already a craft beer fan or not, Gobats said.

The Craft Brew Village, east of the fountain, will be an enclosed and controlled 21-and-older area. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door for the beer tasting from 4 to 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the 218 Taphouse and Ink’d Graphix Plus in Virginia, at Silver Creek Liquor in Mountain Iron or online at

The first 500 people will receive a 5-ounce commemorative brew fest mug. There will be a $5 entry fee into the Craft Brew Village for designated drivers.

While beer will be tapped at the celebration, it is a family-friendly event, with music and festivities open to the public for a free-will donation outside of the village.

All proceeds from the Olcott Fountain Brew Fest, hosted by the Olcott Park Fountain Restoration Project Committee, will be used to create a maintenance fund for the fountain, said Paul Monacelli, committee member.

The group, which has worked diligently to raise funds to bring the fountain back to life, had talked about presenting “a live music event” to commemorate the 80th year since water first flowed from the historic Olcott Park feature on Aug. 16, 1937.

One of the members, Monacelli said, suggested: “Why not have a craft brew fest?”

All but one of the confirmed breweries, including brands that will be represented by local distributors, are from Minnesota: Canal Park Brewing Co., and Lake Superior Brewing Co., both of Duluth; Castle Danger Brewery, of Two Harbors; Voyageur Brewing Co., of Grand Marais; Surly Brewing Co., Fulton Brewery, Indeed Brewing Co., and Lionheart Cider, all of Minneapolis; Finnegans Brew Co., of the Twin Cities; Third Street Brewhouse, of Cold Spring, Minn.; Lift Bridge Brewing Co., of Stillwater, Minn.; Shell’s Beer, of New Ulm, Minn.; Loon Juice, of Spring Valley, Minn.; and Bell’s Brewery, of Kalamazoo, Mich.
